I clearly remember the first time I touched a computer keyboard. It was a crazy large thing, the screen was black with green font, and I was working on my second degree at the University of Washington. The year was 1983.

I clearly remember my first home computer. We spent as much as our car cost us at the time, for a Mac SE. The hard drive and monitor were all in one and the screen was so tiny. The year was 1990.

I clearly remember first getting email and internet. I really wanted email at home because I was working from home and my husband didn’t think I would really use it. I remember figuring out what a ‘website’ was and how much easier it was to find information than the phone book. It was a revelation. The year was 1998.

Twelve years later, it’s hard to imagine a day without a computer in my life. Email, website, facebook, twitter and blogging are as much a part of my day as brushing my teeth. And that is not necessarily a good thing, but at least I still find time to brush (usually twice a day).

My job as the marketing director for Gig Harbor (or your Gig Harbor Guide, my “handle”) has certainly required me to keep on top of the fast paced world of technical and social media. Not always an easy task. And often a little frightening. Take blogging for instance;

Only a little more than a year ago did I begin blogging about Gig Harbor. I was concerned that blogging would seem too self-serving, and that it might result in nasty comments or feedback that was unpleasant. Being the Polly-Anna I am, I really didn’t want to deal with any of that. But, I also felt I was missing another opportunity to tout the wonders of Gig Harbor if I did not dive in to the blogging and the social media world.

So, I took the plunge. And a year later, I can say it has been a great opportunity, one that has grown enough that we are upgrading our blog as well as our website this month.

Our blog that has been hosted on www.gigharborguide.blogspot.com is moving to www.gigharborguide.com – now officially part of our visitor website. The website is also newly refreshed and, though still working out the bugs, has some great new features and upgraded technology to keep it as the number one website for information about the greater Gig Harbor area.

SALMONCHANTED HARBOR RETURNS TO GIG HARBOR

But look again – something isn’t so fishy this year!

April 2010, Gig Harbor Wash; Gig Harbor welcomes the return of SalmonChanted Harbor again this year beginning in May. But this year there is a new twist…those salmon look suspiciously like heron!
Organizers of the third annual art event decided to shake it up in 2010, with heron sculptures instead of salmon. The heron is a bird frequently seen in and around the waters of Gig Harbor bay and other bays and estuaries in the area. These amazing resin sculpture shells have been distributed to 15 local artists. The artists were chosen from a pool of candidates for their unique ideas to make the heron shell into a work of art.
Each artist will create a different themed heron (see list below) and each piece of art will be displayed at a different location throughout historic Gig Harbor from late May through early September. The heron will then be auctioned at the SalmonChanted Evening event, scheduled for September 18th at the Gig Harbor Yacht Club.
All of the sculptures will debut at an event at the Gig Harbor Civic Center, 3510 Grandview Street on Wednesday May 26th from 6-8p.m.

CENSUS BUREAU ROLLS OUT NEW INTERACTIVE GOOGLE MAPS SHOWING 2010 CENSUS PARTICIPATION RATES

Washington Counties, Cities Able to Track Percentage of Households Mailing Back Questionnaires

The U.S. Census Bureau has launched an interactive Website on Google Maps showing initial 2010 census participation rates. The state’s mail-participation rate is presently at 10 percent, 10 points lower than the national participation rate. Census officials anticipate that the participation rate will significantly increase throughout March and April, as households continue to receive and mail back the questionnaires.

Currently, Lincoln County in Eastern Washington has the highest participation rate in the state at 35 percent. Yakima County trails all counties with 1 percent participation. The rate is 9 percent in King County, 11 percent in Pierce County, 8 percent in Snohomish County, 18 percent in Thurston County and 4 percent in Spokane County. At the city level the following participation rates are:
• 10% in Seattle
• 9% in Bellevue
• 11% in Tacoma
• 20% in Olympia
• 8% in Vancouver
• 3% in Spokane
• 1% in Wenatchee
• 11% in Bellingham
• 8% in Kent
• 12% in Bremerton

The collaborative partnership with Google allows communities the ability to track how their area is responding to the once-a-decade count. The Census Bureau will provide daily updates of the percentage of returned census questionnaires using Google Maps and Google Earth.

Individuals are encouraged to go to www.2010census.gov/2010census/take10map/ to monitor their area’s mail-participation rate at city, county and state levels. In addition, the map offers the ability for areas to compare with nearby communities and states.

Most households in Washington State received the much-anticipated, 10-question form in mailboxes last week. Census officials hope that households will fill out their 2010 census questionnaires and mail it back.

It costs the government just the price of a postage stamp when a household mails back the 10-question form. However, it costs the Census Bureau $57 to follow up with a non-responsive household. In 2000, the nation reversed a three-decade decline in mail rates, achieving a mail-participation rate of 72 percent.

Mandated by the U.S. Constitution, the census takes place every 10 years. Census Day is April 1, 2010. Census data determine boundaries for state and local legislative and congressional districts. More than $400 billion in federal funds are distributed annually based on census data to pay for local programs and services, such as schools, highways, vocational training, emergency services, hospitals, unemployment benefits and much more.

Lofting is the first step in building a new boat. It involves drawing the design of the vessel full scale on the loft floor. Once the initial design is laid down, the lines are “faired”, a process of correcting minor errors in the design caused by the small scale in which designs are created. Once the fairing is complete, the builder uses the loft to generate all of the patterns and templates necessary to setup and build the hull.

Class participants will loft the Thunderbird sailboat using the table of offsets and lines given in the original plans. Interested participants can take the first or second session, or both - and learn the process of lofting. The loft will be preserved and used for a variety of purposes in Gig Harbor BoatShop’s on-going work with the Thunderbird Sailboat.

GIG HARBOR, Wash.—(March 25, 2010)—On March 26, Sip. at the wine bar & restaurant in Uptown Gig Harbor marks its one-year anniversary with a new spring menu, addition of Gig Harbor local Daniel Jackson to the team, and a host of community-fostering events through partnerships with Gig Harbor organizations and festivals.

Daniel Jackson’s career began in 1983 at Triples in Seattle, and his palate and talents were honed at the acclaimed Fullers in the Seattle Sheraton. Most recently he developed the wine program at Brix 25 Restaurant in Gig Harbor, which, in turn, led him to Sip. Jackson has an appreciation for and extensive collection of Northwest wines: 98 percent of his personal cellar is comprised of Northwest bottles.

“Right now, there’s a lot happening in Uptown Gig Harbor, and I’m excited to be here, working with Robert Green and the rest of the team,” says Jackson.

Jackson has an exciting spring lined up for Sip. guests, including a recently added full bar and cocktail program, a new spring menu from Gig Harbor’s well-loved, Executive Chef Robert Green, and a series of community events.

Countdown - Farmers Market Time is Here!

Weather like today really makes me excited about spring and summer and all the great things that go on in Gig Harbor during these seasons. And one of my favorite, the Gig Harbor Farmers market, which opens April 3rd.

I really love our Farmers Market, which has come so very far since it began about a decade ago. And, according to market director Dale Schultz, this upcoming market season is going to be event better. Dale has spent the winter recruiting new farmers and new vendors including Gradwohl grass fed organic beef farmer and Last Bite Bakery as well as Ike's Fish and Seafood.

The Saturday Gig Harbor Farmers Market opens April 3rd at the new location on Kimball Drive. Take the Wollochet City Center exit off of Hwy 16 and follow the signs.

Gig Harbor is an awesome place for volunteers. Everyone you meet is a volunteer in some capacity, each individual finding a place to give some time and energy that focuses on something they are passionate about.
April is the time of month to stop and say thanks to those who give back with time. Time is such a valuable commodity. Worth its weight in gold, as they say. So THANK YOU Gig Harbor for all you do.
The City of Gig Harbor thanks their volunteers annually with a small but non-the-less sincere reception and awards ceremony. This year the event takes place on April 19th at 5:30-6:30pm at the Gig Harbor Civic Center. Dozens of citizens volunteer for the city in capacities such as parks commission, design review board, visitor information center volunteer and police department reserve. Each year the Mayor announces the annual Carol Gorman Memorial Volunteer of the Year award to one outstanding city volunteer, as well as the Gig Harbor Visitor Information Center Volunteer of the Year and several police department awards.

There is lots of talk now about the Census. But also lots of confusion. What is it and why is it important to our community?
The first census took place in 1790 to determine the number of seats each state would have in the U.S. House of Representatives. The census also was created to gain a better understanding of where people lived and to establish patterns of settlement as the nation grew.
Today, in addition to administering the census of population and housing the Census Bureau conducts more than 200 annual surveys including the American Community Survey, the Current Population Survey and economic censuses every five years.
A Census Snapshot
What: The census is a count of everyone residing in the United States
Who: All US residents must be counted - both citizens and non citizens
When: You will receive your questionnaire in March either by US mail or hand delivery. Some people in remote areas will be counted in person
Why: The US Constitution requires a national census once every 10 years to count the population and determine the number of seats each state will have i the US House of Representatives.
How: Households should complete and mail back their questionnaires upon receipt. Households that do not respond may receive a replacement questionnaire in early April. Census takers will visit households that do not return questionnaires to take a count in person.

It's Safe - The Census information is 100% confidential is not shared, even with out US Departments. You do not need to fear giving accurate information even if you are an undocumented resident, have issues with the law or the IRS. The information is protected.

It's Farmers Market Time Again

Today, as I write, I have enjoyed an interesting mix of weather outside the window; rain, snow, sun, sleet, dark, sun, snow, rain. All day long it has been curious weather and all I keep thinking is - definitely spring in the Pacific Northwest.

So, just like that Pemco Ad with "socks and sandles guy" you gotta be ready for anything around here...or you'll never leave the house. And there is too much good stuff coming up to not get outside, especially since it is almost Farmers Market time in Gig Harbor.

I really lover our Farmers Market, which has come so very far since it began about a decade ago. And, according to market director Dale Schultz, this upcoming market season is going to be event better. Dale has spent the winter recruiting new farmers and new vendors including Gradwohl grass fed organic beef farmer and Last Bite Bakery as well as Ike's Fish and Seafood.

The Saturday Gig Harbor Farmers Market opens April 3rd at the new location on Kimball Drive. Take the Wollochet City Center exit off of Hwy 16 and follow the signs.

Thanks to a sponsorship by Columbia Bank, every Saturday the market will have live music including Billy Farmer, Steve Stefanowicz and Dave Calhoun - all local favorites.

The Farmers Market has a brand new website www.gigharborfarmersmarket.com and will also be selling new Farmers Market logo wear this year! It's all new and exciting for the Saturday market.

City of Gig Harbor Bond Rating Increase

City of Gig Harbor Receives Standard and Poor’s AA- Rating
Bond rating increase reflects professional and conservative city finances

Gig Harbor, Wash. – March 3, 2010 – Today the City of Gig Harbor received word it has been upgraded to AA- long term rating by Standard and Poor’s. The rating increase will mean a significant saving over the years to the City and its rate payers – about $92,000 in interest savings over the life of the bonds.

The Standard and Poor’s Report justifies the rating upgrade on;
• Location in the economically diverse Pierce County service area with above –average income levels
• Track record of maintaining adequate debt service coverage (DSC) and good liquidity
• Implementation of rate increases
The reports says the foregoing strengths are partially offset by the city’s additional debt needs to fund its current capital improvement plan and near-term need to expand capacity in both its water and sewer system.
The stable outlook reflects Standard and Poor’s expectation that the city will maintain sufficient system net revenues to ensure good DSC and cash on hand; and the stability of the rating will depend on the city’s ability to pass along future rate increases and remain in line with its forecast.

“I would like to thank Finance Director Dave Rodenbach” said City Administrator Rob Karlinsey, “as well as City Engineer Steve Misiurak, and all their staff for their outstanding work in demonstrating professionally and conservatively run city finances and a well-planned capital program in order to make the case for a higher bond rating.”

Cushman Trail Gap Project Complete, and Under Budget!

At the end of February the City of Gig Harbor completed a multi-month project known as the Cushman Trail Gap Project, connecting a section of the Cushman Trail between Cushman Trail Park and Soundview. This project was completed under budget!

Following a request from the State of WA DOT to improve bike facilities and trails, the City of Gig Harbor was awarded a $145K Grant from WSDOT to improve the facilitied in the area for pedestrian and bicycle safety and access. The project was designed, managed and inspected in house by City Staff Jeff Langhelm, Jeff Olsen, Amy Londgren, Marcos McGraw and Terri Reed. City crews completed the detailed work removing all existing 5 foot sidewalks, realignment of the roadway centerline on Hollycroft Street and construction of approximately 1000 lf of new 10 foot wide sidewalk, curb, gutter and electrical conduit for future street light installation.

The city's work was made significantly easier by the patience of partnership of local businesses in particular the owners of the 76 Gas Station and the Harvester Restaurant. Hats off to all who helped this project come to completion.

Construction on Harborview Drive Underway

The City of Gig Harbor is replacing 330 LF of existing asbestos cement water main with 8-inch ductile water main. Construction is now underway on Harborview Drive between Soundview and Pioneer for the next three weeks weather permitting. Construction takes place from 11pm-10am daily.
Preliminary design work (locating and saw cutting the road0 will be ongoing.This work will be performed in the mornings during low traffic volumes.

Be An Apprentice For a Day!

Gig Harbor Boat Shop is offering "Apprentice for a Day" Thunderbird #2 Restoration. Initiated in February 2010, participants in the ongoing program sign up for a single day and work under the guidance of the instructor on the restoration task of the day. The historic 26" Thunderbird Hull #2 (built in 1958 at Eddon Boatyard, now the home of Gig Harbor Boat Shop) is the initial focus of this program. In the first phase, participants are working under the guidance of Thunderbird sailboat specialist Jamie Storkman and Historic Preservationist Matthew Meachem to learn how to properly remove and document boat hardware, accessories and structural pieces using the "U.S. Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Historic Vessel Preservation Projects" as a guide.

Whether you are ready or not, spring is around the corner and gardening gurus are already digging, pruning, shaping and watching as buds, birds, bulbs and bees debut their 2010 ballet. Such an inspirational time of year!

Gig Harbor is a gardeners paradise; full of gardens and gardeners alike. There is also a real sense of community when it comes to gardening in this area, and so many gardeners are turning now to water wise gardening and sustainable gardening.

To keep this new gardening interest going, several local classes are in the works. Check out this list;

1. Since the City of Gig Harbor is creating a new RAIN GARDEN at the Gig Harbor Visitor Information Center I am now learning a lot more about Rain Gardens and how they are the key to managing stormwater and protecting Puget Sound. The city project is a partnership with the city and Pierce County Stream Team, and stewardshippartners.org. A Rain Garden is a shallow depression in a yard planted with a variety of flowers, shrubs and grasses that 'don't mind getting their feet wet." You can learn how rain gardens help soak up rainwater from downspouts, driveways and sidewalks while protecting our local waterways at a free Rain Garden Workshop on Tuesday April 20th 6-8PM. 2. The City of Gig Harbor and Tacoma Pierce County Health Department are presenting a fun, free and informative NATURAL YARD CARE workshop series. Learn how to design and maintain a beautiful landscape the Natural Yard Care way! These workshops will address a variety of yard maintenance issues. Space is limited so you must reserve. Here are the classes being offered;

3. Gig Harbor's Community Garden is back this year at Wilkinson Farm and it's bigger and better than ever. Managed by the non-profit group Healthy Communities of Pierce County, this effort offers both plots for locals and a demonstration garden with produce being donated to the food bank. Applications are now being taken for plots. Volunteers and supplies are needed as well. 4. Adopt-a-Planter Program helps keep historic Gig Harbor green. The Gig Harbor Historic Waterfront Association is once again working with the city of Gig Harbor on the downtown planters and hanging basket program. The program will create 87 hanging baskets and 20 planter boxes that will line Harborview and North Harborview. Volunteers will work with the city on design of baskets and planters and will plant and maintain them through out the summer. Currently cash donations are needed to help fund the program. The GHHWA is looking for the following assistance;

Healing Through Furniture

Bill and Joelene Lemke are amazing people. Despite enduring the loss of their only child Brian two years ago when he was only 17, Bill and Joelene have turned that tragedy into a unique non-profit service for Pierce County residents.
When Brian, a Junior at Peninsula High School in Gig Harbor, passed away from Leukemia in November of 2007 the entire community embraced this wonderful couple and rallied around them in their loss. Brian was an outstanding young man, so full of life and love. It seemed incomprehensible that he was gone.
But so quickly did the Lemkes turn their grief into something positive in Brian's memory. A unique non-profit to "furnish hope to those in need".
Bill Lemke had spent 30 years in the home furnishing industry, working with stores in the Pacific Northwest. The idea was his to match furniture donations, new and used, with victims of domestic abuse, people suffering loss from fire and natural disasters, foster home and especially families coming from transitional housing who are trying to rebuild their lives.
The Northwest Furniture Bank was born (www.nwfurniturebank.org)
This organization believes that no person should have to sleep on the floor in a country as wealthy as the USA. And their goal has been embraced by thousands of people who are donating and volunteering including many local sponsors such as IKEA, Old Cannery, Sleep Country USA, Harkness Furniture, ReclinerLand, Selden's Home Furnishings, Emerald Home Furnishings, KMPS, Cole Sreen Printing.
As the organization grows so does the need. Now the Northwest Furniture Bank is embarking on a unique fund raising event idea. CHAIR AFFAIR is a unique event featuring local artists who have created artistic chairs and other pieces of furniture to be auctioned off to raise funds for the NW Furniture Bank. On March 4th at the Tacoma Art Museum, CHAIR AFFAIR will be a party all about chairs!
Several Gig Harbor artists are involved including Maggie Walters whose chair is pictured here (additonal photos here are artist Judy Gilbert and artist Sanne Beavin). Maggie has created a beautiful chair inspired by Mt. Rainier, one of her favorite spots on earth.
Maggie's husband Dan and Bill Lemke, along with Brian, were hiking and climbing buddies for many years. Maggie's nephew Matt Van den Heuvel is also the operations manager of the NW Furniture Bank, so the family ties are strong. Because Maggie is an artist, its seemed a perfect fit for Maggie to become involved in the NW Furniture Banks first annual CHAIR AFFAIR. If the chair fits...and it did!

And starting mid-March, our website will have a fresh, more colorful and much more user friendly layout! We can't wait to share it with you!

At the same time, our Gig Harbor Guide Blog will also change. No longer will the blog be hosted at Blogspot. It will be hosted on our website and be much easier to access, comment and use as tool for the community. This is another great development for Gig Harbor.

As part of these changes, we are recruiting "guest bloggers" to join our team. The new blog will provide a great opportunity to bring community members into the conversation with insight, ideas, suggestions and tips about our community.

We've been thinking about some topics we would like to have community bloggers focus on; environment, heritage, recreation, food, kids and family. We are open to other ideas as well.

We need to fill the room and have a voice regarding this issue. Increased tolls will only decrease our ability to attract new business and visitors to our community at a time when our local business and local economy need it the most. toll increase will negatively impact our community and our ability to rebound from the hits we have taken this past year. Bridge Tolls: Let YOur Voice Be Heard

A Message from Rob Karlinsey, City of Gig Harbor City Administrator

Who would have thought King County would be the cause of higher-than-needed tolls on the Narrows Bridge? Whether it was in your wildest dreams or not, upcoming King County transportation projects may soon have an adverse, albeit indirect, impact on our Narrows Bridge tolls and therefore the Gig Harbor economy. How so?

Tolls for King County projects such as the 520 Bridge and Alaskan Way are on the horizon, and the State Treasurer wants to position the State in order to obtain the lowest interest rates it can get on the bonds for those King County projects. That's where we (Gig Harbor residents) come in, whether we like or or not. To put the King County projects in the best light for bond rating agencies and future underwriters, the State Treasurer wants to show that the State has a recent history of healthy financial reserves (aka savings accounts) for toll-financed projects. Because there aren't a lot of toll bridges in the State, the Narrows Bridge is the only poster child that can be held as a shining example of robust tolls and resulting large debt fund reserves.

But there's a gaping hole in this logic. Unlike the upcoming toll projects in King County, the Narrows Bridge was financed under a different debt agreement that is "triple backed" by the State and doesn't require a certain amount of annual revenue as a percentage of annual debt payments. Future King County toll projects like the 520 bridge on the other hand, will probably require revenue to debt payment ratios. Even though some officials at the State know they are comparing apples with oranges, they still want to show bond raters that the State has the political will to impose higher tolls to ensure greater reserves and thereby garner better interest rates for the King County toll payers. We're not King County -we struck our own, separate deal with the State on the Narrows Bridge years ago. (Side note: The deal we struck with the State required tolls to pay for the entire cost of the Narrows Bridge; toll-funded projects in King County will be heavily subsidized by other State funds.)

Especially in this economy, we can't afford to let King County be the cause of higher-than-needed tolls in Pierce County. The Narrows Bridge citizen advisory committee (CAC) has carefully studied this issue and is recommending a financially sound toll rate adjustment that is sufficient for the type of bond and leaves an adequate cushion. Being required to pay higher-than-needed tolls to build a higher-than-needed reserve cushion is unfair and will hurt our local economy.

Many would-be shoppers and visitors already see the Narrows Bridge as a psychological impediment. We should be willing to pay our fair share, but we can't let the State add another economic impediment by imposing tolls that are higher than necessary - Gig Harbor has a relatively small and more vulnerable economy that can't afford to take this kind of hit. Our local state legislators (Senator Kilmer and Representatives Seaquist and Angel) agree and have been working aggressively on our behalf.

If you also agree, let your voice be heard. The State Transportation Commission's preliminary recommendation to increase tolls will be sent back to the CAC in the near future, and the Transportation Commission's final recommendation to the State Legislature will be voted on soon thereafter. GIG HARBOR BOATSHOP LAUNCHES FIRST MARITIME PROGRAM

Setting a course that serves the community with traditional and contemporary maritime programming, the Gig Harbor BoatShop is launching The Shipwright's Toolbox workshop designed to familiarize the participant with boat builder's tools. Using the 26" Pirouette (#2 Thunderbird sailboat) as a demonstration and teaching tool, this two-day, eight hour course is scheduled for January 23rd and 24th, 10am-3pm at the Gig Harbor BoatShop, 3805 Harborview Drive. This first of many educational workshops and programs scheduled for 2010 introduces participants to the care and use of hand tools commonly employed by shipwrights. Using lectures, demonstrations and hand-on activities, participants will gain competency in the use of tools, measuring tools, layout and marking tools. "1968 in America" Comes to Gig Harbor

Social turmoil...Political assassinations...The Beatles...Flower Power. On display at the Harbor History Museum in Gig Harbor, the exhibit 1968 in America

1968 in America is coming to the Harbor History Museum in Gig Harbor, Washington beginning January 30, 2010. This exhibition traces the tumultuous events of 1968: a single year in history that rocked the foundations of American society. From the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago and the Vietnam War, the extraordinary events of 1968 witnessed profound change in social and political systems and confirmed to citizens of all ages that fundamental change was both possible and necessary. The Harbor History Museum is the only scheduled venue on the entire west coast for this exhibit.

1968 in America features four major themes: the Power of Idealism, the Power of Music, the Power of the Bullet, and the Power of the Press. Visitors to the Harbor History Museum will experience a variety of artifacts including photographs, magazine covers, political memorabilia, textiles, record albums, and other sights and sounds that explore this transforming moment in American history.

"This exhibition documents a pivotal year in American history," says Dee Harris, director of visual arts and humanities at Mid-American Arts Alliance. "It's much more than a history lesson. It's a message about how the power of idealism, music, press and the bullet made fundamental changes in our nation in 1968, setting the stage for current events that affect America today." The exhibit will also highlight Gig Harbor's transition and growth during the 1960s.

1968 in America provides a "sneak peek" of what is in store for visitors when the museum opens later this year. Professional traveling exhibits like 1968 in America will be featured in the Special Exhibitions Gallery.

The Gig Harbor Peninsula Historical Society, dba Harbor History Museum, was founded in 1963, and opened a museum in 1973. Shoreline Master Program Update Open House

The Shoreline Master Program is an element of the city's Comprehensive Plan and regulates all development and use activity within 200 feet of the shoreline. GET MOVING GIG HARBOR

It's finally here! The long awaited map that is the companion to the walk markers laid last summer in Gig Harbor city sidewalks has arrived!. This beautiful new map lays out five separate walking/running routes within the harbor.

The brainchild of Dr. Pat Hogan, this project was a labor of love of Dr. Hogan, his wife Joan and the group "Healthy Communities of Pierce County". Dr. Hogan marked and laid out all the routes, researched and purchased the weather resistant product to use for the markers, and then worked with crews from the City of Gig Harbor to lay-down the markers around the harbor last summer.

In addition, the Tacoma/Pierce County Health Department came on board to help produce the companion map. A lot of effort went in to recruiting sponsors to help pay for the map. Stepping forward to help were MultiCare Gig Harbor Medical Park, Route 16 Running, Puget Sound Neurology, Achieve and the City of Gig Harbor.

The map provides information about the following;

RED ROUTE (3.0 miles) Starts and ends at the bus stop across from the Best Western Wesley Inn. It includes several hills.

GREEN ROUTE (4.0 miles) Starts and ends at the Old Ferry Landing and goes all along the historic waterfront

BLUE ROUTE (5.0 miles) "Uptown" this route starts at the Library on Point Fosdick and goes all the way downtown via Soundview and back up.

ORANGE ROUTE This route covers the trail in Grandview Forest Park which total 2.0 miles

PURPLE ROUTE (5.1) This loop is the new Cushman Trail route from Hunt Street (Park and Ride) to 96th NW and includes beautiful views of the harbor and several hills.

The Orange and Purple Routes do not have mile markers in the sidewalks.

Making the environment a priority in 2010

Gig Harbor has, over the past few years, made a commitment to the local environment through local programs, projects and events. Both at the grassroots citizen level and the city/county government level. Some of the recent developments include;

Completion of the Cushman Trail Extension in partnership with Pierce County
A $1500 Lu Winsor Grant award for the 2010 Donkey Creek Chum Festival

A $1.4M Federal Transportation Enhancement Project grant for the Donkey Creek Day-lighting Project.

Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group chosen to begin work on the Donkey Creek Day Lighting Project (awaiting Council Approval).

Release of a new book published by Harbor WildWatch called "Puget Sound Wildside" featuring original illustrations and education on our Puget Sound marine environment (no available at the Gig Harbor Visitor Information Center, Gig Harbor's Mostly Books and the Seattle Aquarium as well as other locations.
Ongoing environmental and recreation partnerships between PenMet Parks, Key Pen Parks, Envirocorp and other working to develop and/or restore such places as the Sehmel Homestead and the Wollochet Estuary Parks

Gig Harbor recently caught the attention of Dr. Usha Varanasi, Acting SW Fisheries Science Center Science & Research Director at NOAA and NW Fisheries Science Center Science & Research Director who wrote, "Science is an integral part of our daily lives, from the safety of foods we eat to the health of our ecosystems that provide clean water for drinking and recreation. The (Donkey Creek) Chum Festival is an excellent venue for bringing people together to exchange information on the science that informs society on important environmental issues such as recovery of salmon and health of the habitats that supports them."

Gig Harbor and the greater peninsula region are committed to the environment and preserving our local eco-systems for future generations. There are lots of ways you can get involved. Below is an article written by Erin Ewald of the Pierce Conservation District about last year's Donkey Creek Chum Festival. She does a wonderful job describing the range of organizations, activities and interests that come together. I have taken the liberty of running her article in its entirety.

DONKEY CREEK CHUM FESTIVAL 2009 - by Erin Ewald

Every once in a while a plan comes together. After two years of struggling to time the tides, coordinate partner organizations, address advertising logistics, and cross our fingers for a break in the weather, the third annual Donkey Creek Chum Festival went off without a hitch.

A beautiful October day greeted the canoe and kayak racers at the Austin Creek Estuary in Gig Harbor as they prepared to paddle around fishing vessels and each other in a mad dash to the finish line. Back on land, the Gig Harbor Fisherman and local Kiwanis club grilled up tasty salmon burgers and hot dogs. Lined up in front of the new Harbor History Museum, local organizations celebrated this year's accomplishment to improve water quality, protect habitat, and increase stewardship of Puget Sound. Throughout the day, event participants enjoyed opportunities to make their own salmon art, time themselves donning boating survival gear, learn how to fly fish, and investigate interpretive touch tanks displaying urchins, anemones, and sea cucumber. Additional booths provided event guests with energy saving tools like compact fluorescent light bulbs, as well as information on project underway that are designed to improve local habitat and open waterways. Residents were informed of park locations in order to encourage them to gt outside and view wildlife and enjoy the facilities. Opportunities were also provided for residents to get involved in next year's activities.

Near the end of the day, after the race, participants were awarded their ribbons and the booths were packed up, the event sponsors gathered together to note the only thing missing at the party. Across the street at Donkey Creek Park, the stream was empty of returning chum salmon. While the celebration was held a little too early in the season to witness the salmon's winter arrival, the success of the event remained clear. Each group that participated in the Donkey Creek Chum Festival is dedicated to ensuring the health of local waters and the resources of Puget Sound. Without clean water, the associated fishing, recreation, economy and intrinsic value is lost. As Paul Ancich, a local fisherman and event sponsor noted (editors note - Paul is the founder of the Donkey Creek Chum Festival), the ripple effect that one person's actions can spark is incredible. The willingness of a community to rally around a fish is undeniable.

Winning Numbers: 3/50 Project Boosts Support for Locally Owned Businesses

A Message from the Gig Harbor Historic Waterfront Association -
For independent local business owners, the best formula for surviving a holiday season recession bay be a simple number - 3/50.
The 3/50 Project is a consumer driven movement that is being embraced in Gig Harbor just as it is catching on in many small communities across the U.S. The project, voluntarily backed by independent small business enterprises, encourages shoppers to pick three locally owned businesses and spend $50 a month at them.
It's that simple - no member contracts, no promotional costs, no rebate points. Merchants register on a website to raise attention for the project, and consumers decide to direct their spending power into their local communities where it makes a difference.
The project's website spells it out with some clear statistics:

Of $100 spent in locally owned stores, $68 returns to the community in the form of taxes payroll, and other expenditures. Shop at a chain store and that return could drop to $43.
If half the employed population spent $50 per month in locally owned businesses, it could generate $42 billion in revenue, according to US Labor Department statistics.

"Sometimes the simplest solutions can solve the most complex challenges we face, " said Mary DesMarais, executive director of the Gig Harbor Historic Waterfront Association (GHHWA). She and others in the GHHWA are encouraging businesses in the historic waterfront district to learn about and participate in the project if they want to create a local economic stimulus program of their own.

"This is something we can do for our own businesses and community, without any delay or complexity. It makes sense that if we want our local businesses to thrive, we must act accordingly. that's what this project does for us."

In Gig Harbor's retail community, some local store owners already know about and support the 3/50 project. Cherie Earnhart, owner of Vanilla Bean cooking and kitchen store, and her storefront neighbor Randi Kokonaski, owner of SeaGlass Interiors, are enthusiastic about the project and are hoping it will gain an increased local following. While busy at their counters wrapping merchandise for customers, they both said the idea makes sense as a way to encourage the benefits of shopping locally.

The 3/50 Project was created in Minneapolis last spring and has generated a grassroots consumer movement in local shops from New Jersey to Arizona. Some small enterprises claim that the posters and fliers promoting the 3/50 approach have saved their businesses, or at least boosted business with double-digit increases in revenue and strong local following among customers.

The backbone of the project is an informational website http://www.the350project.net/, where local retailers and independent shop owners can register and obtain information and promotional fliers, website badges and other self marketing materials.

The 3/50 Project is gaining media spotlight, with recent stories having appeared in The Wall Street Journal, on CNN and in Consumer Reports magazine.

I can't imagine a more difficult year than 2009, so 2010 brings hope and optimism. But I for one, am not making a resolution for 2010. Instead, I am strategizing....what is it that I want and how do I achieve it? I'm turning to Dr. Seuss for inspiration;

And you are the one, who'll decide where to go

I have a book that inspired me for this blog. It's called "Where Will You Be Five Years From Today?" by Dan Zadra. This book has reinforced for me the personal decisions I have made during 2009...and inspired me to stay on track. My five year goals reflect my personal values. MY personal values. Not my employer, my community or even my family. Although all of my values are in line with these groups and people - if they weren't I wouldn't be very happy would I?

My mission in life is to be happy.

What is your mission? Choose a personal mission rather than making a resolution and work toward that in a realistic way all year long and not just in January. Being happy is what it is about...what makes me happy is my family first, my friends second, my community third. My job is not even in the top three is it? But the way it should work is, that if I am happy and accomplishing my personal mission and goals, then my job will be fulfilling as well.

I don't have this down pat yet. But I am working on it. And I expect it to continue to be a work in progress.

When I heard the dispatcher call Pierce County Sheriff's Deputy Kent Mundell's personnel number out of service last night at 5:04 p.m., I experienced an all too familiar sensation of shock and sadness. I stopped in my tracks - how could this happen again?
For a moment in time my concerns for getting work done, solving problems, pushing for deadlines seemed so meaningless. Infinitely more important than such routine matters, is dealing with the loss of one who was like a family member to those of us that work in public safety. At such times I am at a loss for words to express the immense value of Kent's life, one who served with such a a capable hand and courageous heart. Kent's passing will leave a void that we cannot fill by ourselves, we will need help.
On behalf of my department and community, I want Sheriff Paul Pastor, the Pierce County Sheriff's Department and Kent's family to know we will cherish his memory. His bravery and sacrifice will serve as a lasting legacy for those of us left behind - tasked with keeping anarchy from overcoming the order we have become so accustomed to in this country.
Pause with me now and, in your own way, reflect on what traits we need to emulate as a community as we contemplate what tasks remain for us to accomplish to ensure Kent's death was not in vain. We want his family to know that we will miss him. Our hearts and prayers are with you at this most difficult time.

H1N1 Vaccine Available in Pierce County

More than 238,000 H1N1 flu doses were distributed for vaccination during 2009 in response to the swine flu outbreak started last spring.
Director of Health Dr. Anthony Chen said the Tacoma -Pierce county Health Department approved 238,290 vaccine doses for shipment throughout the county by Washington State Department of Health. Of that number TPCHD's vaccine office distributed 37,406 doses. the remainder was sent directly from DOH to health care providers, pharmacies and other retail stores.
In contrast to earlier this year, H1N1 vaccine is in good supply and the Health Department encourages everyone to be vaccinated. Available vaccination clinics can be found at www.tpchd.org.

Tree Recycling Available in Pierce County

Make a New Year's resolution to help protect the environment by recycling your Christmas tree. Pierce County residents can recycle their discarded trees through the Public Works and Utilities department, various cities and towns and county-contracted private solid waste and recycling companies.

All trees collected through the self-haul and curbside yardwaste programs are composted into a beneficial soil amendment that is popular with home and commercial gardeners. Treecycling helps save valuable landfill space, while the composte created enhances soil quality, saves water and reduces reliance on chemical fertilizers.

Pierce County residents who subscribe to yardwaste collection services can "treecycle" their unflocked tree curbside. Other residents can recycle trees free of charge at designated locations. Flocked trees cannot be recycled and must be disposed of as garbage.

Milton, Tacoma, Puyallup and Ruston have special collection programs for households within their limits. Contact the city or town hall or local garbage hauler for more details.

To recycle a tree in Pierce County, remove the tree stand, tinsel, decorations, garland, nails and staples.

to recycle curbside, cut the tree into 4 foot lengths or smaller and place loosely inside the yardwaste container. If it doesn't all fit, dispose of the peices over several weeks on the regularly scheduled yardwaste pick up days.

Self haulers can take their tree to any of the following locations;

Anderson Island residential waste drop box, 9607 Steffenson Road, Sunday from 10a-2p and Monday from 1p-5p

Hidden Valley transfer station, 17925 Meridian Street East near South Hill, 8a-5:45p, seven days a week

City of Gig Harbor Receives Federal Grant Money

President Obama signed appropriations bill last week that included two federal grants for the City of Gig Harbor;

1.) $1.4M from the Federal Transportation Community & System Preservation Program sponsored by Senator Patty Murray for continuing the Donkey Creek day-lighting project. The Donkey Creek project had already received $800K grant from the Federal Department of the Interior, sponsored by Congressman Norm Dicks. Combining these two grants provides the City of Gig Harbor the money needed to design and begin construction on this project which includes day-lighting the creek, replacing the underground pipe with a fish-friendly culvert and building a pedestrian friendly bridge. Gig Harbor City Councilman Tim Payne says "This is a dream come true! The restoration of Donkey Creek will bring attention to the importance and influence of salmon on one of Gig Harbor's earliest industries: commercial fishing."

2.) $730 K from the Federal Housing and Urban Development Economic Development Initiative Program sponsored by Senator Patty Murray, for the Gig Harbor Boys & Girls Hope Center for programming and capital campaign. This money will be added to the $250K the City of Gig Harbor has already committed to the new Boys and Girls Club. Councilman Derek Young says "Obtaining these funds for the Boys and Girls Club means that they can expand programming that would have otherwise not been available in Gig Harbor. Support for the club from our congressional delegation has been critical throughout the process."

Don't Trash Your Recycling Cart!

Are you putting trash in your recycling cart?

Pierce County households averaged 1 pound of nonrecyclables in the recycling cart each month last year. Now the average is up to 13/4 pounds per month - a 75% increase.

Nonrecyclable materials make trucks fill up faster. That requires more routes, more labor, more fuel and higher costs.

Costs also increase because more sorting is needed ot separate contaminates from potential recyclables.

To keep our contamination low, here are a few suggestions:

Plastic bags, styrofoam and clamshell containers are contaminants that cannot be collected in our curbside program.

Lets review: Plastic bottles must have a neck smaller than a base. For example: bottles that contained water, soda, ketchup or shampoo.

We cannot recycle plasitc containers without a "neck" such as margarine tubs, yougurt containers, clamshell containers and drinking cups.

Plastic bags and glass need to be recycled in other ways. They damage machines and may injure workers during the sorting process.

Glass shards also get caught in paper and other materials, lowering their value for manufacturers.

It's a step backward when we consider the positive growth. Since our single cart recycling program began in 2005, households are recycling 64% more paper, 94% more aluminum and 33% more tin cans.

Also noteworkth: Each household recycles an average of 34 plastic bottles (20 oz size) per month.

Here are examples of the leading trouble shpots and tips to help solve the contamination problem.

PROBLEM: Plastic bags and film like shrink wrap. These materials get caught and wrap around the sorting machinery. Recyclables should be loose, not encolsed in a clear or black plastic bag.

TIP: Take plastic shopping bags to participting grocery stores for recycling. Use cloth or other reusable shopping bags just one could save 100-200 plastic bags per year.

PROBLEM: Butter tubs, yougurt-type containers and bottles from pesticides, herbicides or authomotive fluids. Containers with a recycling symbol may not necessarily be recyclable.

Be sure to "check the neck". We only accept plastic bottles with an opning that's smaller than the base.

PROBLEM: Glass in our comingled recycling carts may injure workers and damage equipment in the sorthing facility. Broken glass also ends up in bales of recycled paper, damaging expensive equipment at paper mills.

TIP: Glass collected at various drop-off sites is emptied directly into shipping containers and marketed.

News from the Gig Harbor Boat Shop

The Gig Harbor Boat Shop, at Eddon Boat is working hard on programming and events. They are now open every Saturday from 11am-2pm and invite the public to some see what they are doing. Visitors to the Boat Shop will now see volunteers demonstrating boat repair techniques.

Thunderbird Hull #2 is off the trailer and onto the cradle that volunteers made. She was inched into the building, which took four hours, and now rests safe and comfortably inside the building. Special thanks go out to Peninsula Light for helping lift Hull #2 onto the cradle. The boat made it under the beam over the inner door with only 1.5 inches to spare! Now the work begins on restoration. Once completed, the restored vessel will become part of the on-the-water training programs planned by the Boat Shop.

Thanks go out to Cook's Concrete for the temporary use of their flatbed trailer, which will be used for moving a classic 26' Gig Harbor built tugboat to the BoatShop for repair. Once restored, it will also become part of the on-the-water training program.

The Gig Harbor BoatShop was recently awarded a gift of more than $11,000 from the Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation. In addition, The BoatShop received a $10,000 gift from an anonymous donor. These generous gifts are a great stride toward the goal of operating the boatyard full time. You can join the effort by donating today. Gig Harbor's Wesley Inn Celebrates 12th Anniversary

Saturday December 12th marks the 12th Anniversary of Gig Harbor's Wesley Inn hotel located at 6575 Kimball Drive. This beautiful hotel offers first class hospitality in beautifully appointed rooms.

Cassidy Glaspie, General Manager, was on the staff opening day, and now serves as GM. When the hotel opened, 20% of the rooms were ready. Today the inn operates with a total , 89 rooms. 29 beutiful new rooms were added last year.

Cushman Trail to Open in Gig Harbor

A ribbon cutting ceremony will mark the official opening of Cushman Trail Phase Two, in Gig Harbor, on Wednesday December 16th at 2:30p.m. The public is invited.

Mayor Chuck Hunter and Pierce County Councilman Terry Lee will recognize the milestone, a project that has been a joint partnership development of Pierce County Parks and Recreation Department, the City of Gig Harbor and Tacoma Public Utilities. the trail connection design phase began in 2006 and included public input meetings in 2007 prior to design approval through the permitting process. The $3.5 million construction contract, which is shared by Pierce County and the City of Gig Harbor, began in September 2008.

The trail occupies land adjacent to or under the Cushman Power line. Phase 2, an additional 2.5 miles of 16" wide perviouse asphalt with a 4" gravel shoulder, is exclusively for non-motorized uses. This section continues the existing trail from the Pierce Transit Park & Ride om Kimball Drive, through Wilkinson Farm Park (City of Gig Harbor) and ending at 96th Street, just off Burnham Drive in the city limits.

A section of the trail between Foster Street and Wilkinson Farm Park is constructed on 400' long pin-pile bridge, which is required to minimize impacts to the wetland in the area. A lighted crosswalk has been installed across Rosedale Street. The trail provides dramatic scenery and natural resource area with trail slopes that vary from nearly level to a challenging 8%. The route crosses deep ravines with streams, wildlife viewing and views of Gig Harbor. The trail also provides Tacoma Public Utilities improved access to their power transmission facilities.

Future plans for continuing the trail to Gig Harbor North at Borgen Blvd. have been designed and permitted.

Yesterday I spent more than $100 at a local jeweler. Today I am out searching for some sailing gear for my son. I know I can find it downtown. I printed a list of "must reads" from a friend of mine who is a librarian at the Seattle Public Library. I will buy or order these books at the local book store.

Gig Harbor Holiday Tour of Homes Next Weekend

The HarborFest Holiday Tour of Homes has become a traditional way to start the holidays in gig Harbor. 2009 looks to be one of the best ones yet, with homes from Canterwood to Cromwell, the tour offers an inside look at some incredible decorated private homes - a special peek into beautifully decorated homes of the harbor. Some locations home baked treats and hot drinks will be available while in other homes holiday music will be provided by the Peninsula Youth Orchestra.

The 14th annual HarborFest Tour of Homes, conducted by the Altrusa Foundation of Gig Harbor, will be held on Saturday December 12th from 10AM - 4PM. Tickets and programs will be available at The INN at Gig Harbor after 9:30AM on the 12th.

The annual HarborFest Tour of Homes is Altrusas primary fund raiser, raising money to support Altrusa projects such as the Community Kitchen at the new Boys & Girls Club/Senior Center, the Peninsula Youth Orchestra and Altrusa Serving Kids program.

"It's hard to imagine how the homeowners do it," said Shirley Hanson, Altrusa Foundation President, "but every year the decorations seem to be more exciting!".

Tickets for the tour are $20 in advance or $25 the day of the event. Advance tickets are available at John L. Lane Scelzi, owner and founder of Sip. at the wine bar & restaurant, is happy to announce the promotion of Chef de Cuisine Robert Green to Executive Chef.

Green, who has been sith Sip. Gig Harbor since doors opened in March 2009, brings to the position 23 years of culinary experience in restaurants, hotels and country clubs across the United States.

To say Chef Green has enjoyed a varied, colorful career is an understatement. He went from the U.S. Marine Corps to French culinary school, and then apprenticed with Jim Hughes, National Chef of tje Year (1979). Gig Harbor Tree Lighting on Saturday

One of Gig Harbor's favorite events among the locals is the annual tree lighting event held the first Saturday of December every year. Since it's inception more than 20 years ago the community has come together each year in holiday spirit to celebrate together.

This years event on Dec 5th begins at 5pm with music by the Peninsula Community Chorus and special activities by Harbor WildWatch. CenturyLink and the City of Gig Harbor sponsor the event and provide free Santa hats and glow necklaces.

The Gig Harbor Historic Waterfront Association provides cookies and cider for free and this year Fort Lewis will be honored for their community support. Each year Fort Lewis provides the beautiful 40 foot tree that is installed at the park by City crews.

Santa arrives around 5:30pm via Pierce County Gig Harbor Fire Truck and the tree is lit! Santa then spends time meeting with all the children in the park.

This event is a wonderful, fun, free, family, festive tradition in beautiful Gig Harbor, right on the waterfront. Join us!

Turkey Trot Totally Terrific!

The sixth annual Gig Harbor Turkey Trot that took place on Thanksgiving morning was another terrific successes. Holmes Chiropractic, the organizers of the event told us today that over 1600 participant braved the November weather for a fun morning full of funny hats and lots of money and canned goods raised for Gig Harbor's FISH Food Bank.

In addition to all the Gig Harbor Trotters, simultaneously in Iraq nearly 300 soldiers ran and also raised money for the cause. The Iraqi leg of the race was organized by CPT Laura Jeffrey, Critical Care Flight Nurse, 47th Combat Support Hospital and Gig Harbor resident. This photo shows her with Lt. Penny Decker also of Gig Harbor.

Gig Harbor has a lot to be thankful for, now and through out the year. Particularly we should be thankful for those serving in Iraq, people like Dr. Tim Holmes and his staff whose endless energy makes Turkey Trot a success, all those who braved the weather and the wonderful volunteers of the FISH Food Bank that serves so many in need around the Gig Harbor Peninsula.

A Message From Gig Harbor Police Chief Mike Davis

It is hard to comprehend the tremendous loss our close knit law enforcement family experienced on Sunday with the senseless murder of four of our comrades. It causes us all to reflect on how truly vulnerable we are when we suit up for duty each day. This is a challenging time for law enforcement in America; I only hope it is not the start of a terrible trend.

Our hearts and prayers go out to the members of the Lakewood Police and the families of our four friends. I assure you the courageous and brave individuals who have chosen this profession and the families that support them will survive this very tragic event and become even stronger...to do otherwise would render this great loss in vain.

As a community, I think this event should reinforce our resolve to support the men and women who have dedicated themselves to protect others. Every law enforcement officer faces not only their own daily family responsibilities we all encounter, but also the duty to protect the families of others. And these tasks are all done before self.

As a department we sent two officers to the scene immediately after the call for help came out on Sunday. We will continue to support the Lakewood Police Department with whatever they need to insure the person responsible for this travesty is brought to justice. I appreciate the outpouring of support toward our own officers as we feel the same grief as our peers and I hope that the public at large understands the magnitude of the inherent dangers we face daily.

Peace be with the law enforcement officers taken from us on Sunday. And may an even greater peace come to the families of these brave officers who can say that the sacrifice of their loved ones have made a positive difference in our world.

The day before and the day after Thanksgiving are always big dining out days. I think I heard once that the day before Thanksgiving is the busiest pizza ordering day of the year. It makes sense because who want to cook dinner when you are up to your eyeballs in breadcrumbs and giblets!

Before you order that pizza, remember that Gig Harbor is blessed with some quick, simple, inexpensive and delicious dining options. You'll feel better anyway to get out of the house for an hour. Take a trip to the historic waterfront district and enjoy. The downtown area of Gig Harbor is bookended with two favorites, both now offering some great new options;

ANTHONY'S in the Finholm area has fantastic Happy Hour options in the bar, daily from 4-6:30 p.m. The new Happy Hour menu is perfect for a quick, delicious and inexpensive bite. A CHRISTMAS STORY opens Friday at Paradise Theatre

My kids grew up with Jean Shepard's 1980's movie A CHRISTMAS STORY. More than any other holiday classic, that is the one that resonated with my family. My kids are grown now, but still today you often hear remarks around our house that reference lines from that film. Our favorite "Randy lay there like a slug", surpasses "fra-gi-le" but only by a smidgen. And we also love to make a "triple dog dare" or surprise someone with "a major award". In fact, if you visit my office you will see right here in my office, A CHRISTMAS STORY leg lamp, my own personal "major award".

If you have no idea what-so-ever what I'm talking about, then you have never seen the movie "A Christmas Story", a hilarious narrative on the life of a 10year old boy in post-war middle America who wants a special gift for Christmas. This story has now been made into a play and Gig Harbor's Paradise Theatre brings it to life on their newly remodeled stage. Vicki Richards of Paradise tells me that when they heard this story was being made into a play, they knew right away that they had to do it.

Ralphie Parker, desires one thing for Christmas, a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200 Shot Range Model Air Rifle with a Compass. And Ralphie will do almost anything for it...and along the way the mishaps and antics of his friends, brother, mother, father and many other memorable characters make this a classic for the entire family. There's even a "deranged Easter Bunny" - what does that have to do with Christmas? You'll have to see the show to find out.

OLIVER returns to Gig Harbor this Holiday Season

Encore! Theater is back this season with OLIVER, one of Encore's most successful productions. Every few years Encore brings this show back to Gig Harbor with its large cast of kids and adults, funny yet touching holiday story and memorable music such as "Food, Glorious Food" and "As Long As He Needs Me".

Holiday Helpers Return to Gig Harbor

Once again this year, the Gig Harbor Police Department is helping the community with their 5th annual Holiday Helpers program. Sponsored by Jaycox Gig Harbor Police Benevolent Fund, and dedicated to providing charitable and educational assistance to the youth of the community.

Holiday Helpers allows local children in need the opportunity to get to know the Gig Harbor Police Department officers as well as the Pierce County Sheriff's Department deputies, while Christmas shopping at the Gig Harbor Target store. Each child is provided their own Target Gift Card purchased with donations by community members and local area service clubs. In addition, the children are provided a tour of the Gig Harbor Police Department and learn about safety while enjoying lunch with the officers and deputies.

The Holiday Helpers program focuses on children between the ages of seven and fourteen who are chosen based on social and or economic need. This year about 14 kids will receive this honor.

The public is asked to help by donating to the Jaycox Gig Harbor Benevolent Fund Holiday Helpers Program to assure there are enough resources this year to allow this children to receive this memorable holiday experience. This opportunity to interact with law enforcement in a positive way makes a big impact on this kids.

Take a Look at the Changes at Sip Wine Bar, Gig Harbor

Let's not beat around the bush. Some folks thought it was too expensive. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. But the thing is, Sip Wine Bar and Restaurant in Gig Harbor's fabulous Uptown Shopping area listened to its customers. And made some changes. So now it's time to give them another try.

Last week I had a wonderful opportunity to sit with the owner of Sip and the Marketing Director of Washington Restaurant Group and talk about Gig Harbor as a unique community, and what it takes to be a successful business here. Those of us who live here already know the secret; we are not Seattle, we are not Bellevue, we are not Tacoma. The secret - don't try to put Gig Harbor into someone elses' box. We are, Gig Harbor.

The awesome thing about my conversation last week at Sip, was how eager and interested they were in learning more about Gig Harbor. Who are we and what makes us tick? They are a great organization that really is interested in making their restaurant property a place Gig Harbor enjoys.

So, it's time to give them another try Gig Harbor. Changes have been made to the prices on the menu and they have also changed up the wine pours. A fabulous entree Cabernet Braised Black Angus Ribs is only $19. Grilled Lamb Chops with a Port Mint Reduction will run you $28. If you're like me and like small plates as your entree the Sip Sweet Roll Sliders will only run you $9 and the Crab Cakes are $13. Don't forget the hand cut frittes for $7. It's a toss up for me as to my favorite salad...the traditional Iceberg Wedge with Roquefort ($9) or the Poached Pear with Arugula, spiced pecans and goat cheese ($9). Another great option each night is the homemade soups. When I was there last week the choice was a golden and red beet soup. I love beets so I had to try it. It was amazing, and so beautiful in its presentation!

Since it is a Wine Bar, you don't want to miss out on the incredible selection of wine at Sip. The choices are wide and diverse. 60z glass or full bottles are available with dinner or in the bar. Bottled beer is also available and there is talk of future cocktails as well.

Gig Harbor Gets New Indian Restaurant

A tried and true Tacoma favorite, Gateway to India, has opened a new location in Gig Harbor. I had the opportunity to eat there today and it was delicious and inexpensive.

I have eaten at the Tacoma location several times. It will be great to have an Indian Restaurant in Gig Harbor...another in a line of new restaurants that have opened in Gig Harbor the past few months.

The menu is nearly identical to the Tacoma location. The lunch buffet (all you can eat) is inexpensive and a great way to taste your way through Indian staples - especially if you are new to this fabulous cuisine. The great thing about Indian food (besides the Naan and Saag Aloo) is that you have the ability to choose how spicy you like it. Again, if you are new to this cuisine, you can try different levels of spiciness as you learn all about this fabulous, flavorful, delicious and healthy ethnic option.

It's beginning to look a lot like you-know-what!

The Christmas Holiday season used to start on the day after Thanksgiving (now referred to as Black Friday). However in the past decade or so, holiday decorations, commercials, lights and even bell ringers sneak their way into November...stretching the holiday season from Halloween to New Years.

It's okay really, especially knowing how hard retailers are working to entice shoppers in an effort to end this dismal year on a good note. Hopefully shoppers are aware how important it is to shop local and keep your holiday gift dollars (even if limited dollars) close to home.

Turkey Trot returns to Gig Harbor Thanksgiving morning

Justify that third helping this Thanksgiving by starting your day at the Gig Harbor Turkey Trot 5K/10K to benefit Gig Harbor FISH Food Bank, Thursday November 26th 2009 in historic downtown Gig Harbor.

Sponsored by Holmes Chiropractic, the Gig Harbor Turkey Trot raises money and food items for the 501(c)3 Peninsula FISH Food Bank, an all volunteer organization that helps families around the peninsula region.

Nice Fall Walks Outside of Gig Harbor

There is still a little time left to enjoy the fall color in and around the Gig Harbor peninsula area. Recently my husband and I checked out two great parks we had never been to. Both are easy to get to, easy walking, great for bird watching, peaceful and quiet and have great fall foliage.

1. Harbor Family Park

It's actually a bit embarrasing to say I hadn't been to this park, because it is within walking distance to my house. But, alas, I just had not found the time to get there until last Saturday. My husband and I tried a new running route, and while passing by the park I said "We gotta check this place out". So, we took a nice walk through the woods before continuing our run. This park is much larger than I thought, over 18 acres. It was very quiet and peaceful and as we walked the slender trails I was sure we would meet up with a bear or a deer around every corner. It really did not feel like I was so close to my home, or to busy 40th & 70th Streets. The trails are a bit rough still, and no services are available here, but there is a small parking area and an abundance of wooded silence. A great place to get lost for an hour or so. Harbor Family Park is one of the many parks managed by PenMetParks. http://www.penmetparks.org/

2. Two Saturday's ago, my husband and I drove across the Purdy Spit and onto Elgin Clifton, where we made a right on 150th AVe KPN to find the Rocky Creek Conservation Area. I had never heard of this park, until we stumbled upon it on line. Rocky Creek Conservation Area is surprisingly large - 224 acres and is managed jointly by Key Pen Parks (http://www.keypenparks.com/) and Pierce County for the public enjoyment of the existing ecosystem. Trails are rough but passable. We spent about an hour and half winding through three different trail routes and never saw another human. We did however see Fir, Hemlock, Alder, Cedar, lots of birds and two creeks. It was a surprise to find this park tucked away and we enjoyed our time there.

3. If you want to stay in the City limits and take a walk, I highly recommend three parks that many locals don't seem to ever use; Grandview Forest Park is a beautiful wooded park on Grandview Drive right next door to the Civic Center, Wilkinson Farm Park on Rosedale is a 17 acre estuary and pioneer farm in the heart of the city (and where this owl photo was taken recently), and Adam Tallman Park on Wollochet just off of Hwy 16 is an easy esturary walk that is flat and offers great bird viewing.

Don't let the clouds keep you indoors, enjoy nature this fall through out the beautiful Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula area.

Get Ready for Winter Gig Harbor

I left on vacation September 24th and it was still summer in Gig Harbor. I returned on October 12th and it was winter....I seemed to have missed fall all together in my three week absence.

So, a quick adjustment was in order, both for my body and my garden!

Winter brings a variety of projects, including preparing for snow or windstorms and power outages.

Given the wide variety of tiny eco-systems in the Gig Harbor area, each resident and business needs to plan separately. When we have snow, I am always amazed when I drive from my home on Wollochet Bay to my office on Judson Street. The elevation changes in that stretch of road are surprising, and the road conditions can vary greatly.

Planning ahead for your family, your business, and your commute based on your individual situation will make life a little easier during these stressful weather events. So, do you have a plan? If not do it now...it's November already and not too early for wind and snow!

The City of Gig Harbor has the following tips to help keep local residents and businesses safe during storms and inclement weather. Prepare, prepare, prepare!

Develop a plan for your business and contact your local fire and police with any questions you might have, BEFORE an emergency.

Make sure your employees and or your family are familiar with the plan.

Keep an updated hard copy contact list of important phone numbers at your office and at your home (not just on your computer).

Keep a battery operated radio and flash light with fresh batteries at your office and your home.

Be sure to have a first aid kit, water and non-perishable food at your home and office.

Know where gas, water and electricity shut off points are.

Don't drive unless you absolutely must. Snow removal is quicker and safer with fewer cars on the road.

Clean your own sidewalk - this goes for business and residents too. Sidewalks are the responsibility of the property owner. If you lease your business space, be sure to have a plan in place with the property owner.

That last one causes confusion each time we have snow or ice. The City of Gig Harbor crews will be very busy in a weather emergency making sure roads are safe and keeping water, sewer and power operating. Cleaning sidewalks falls to the responsibility of property owners. The Gig Harbor Historic Waterfront Association is looking for contacts of local people who have small tractors or good solid backs who would be willing to assist in the historic downtown area with snow removal. Gig Harbor now has a brewery and the Tap Room is open!

On Saturday my husband and I made our first (of many I'm sure) visit the 7 Seas Brewery Tap Room in Gig Harbor. Did you know Gig Harbor has its own brewery? It's so cool to be able to say that!

The tap room just opened last week, but the word is out because the tiny room was full when we arrived late on Saturday afternoon. About 15 people were enjoying the brew and each others company in the small tasting room that overlooks the production area.

The Seven Seas Brewery (Home of the Ultimate Proper Pint) is located right next to the Inn at Gig Harbor (go through their parking lot to the North side of the hotel 3207 57th Street Ct. NW). They have lots of parking. Open hours are a little funky, so check their website http://www.7seasbrewing.com/ but right now the hours are Thursday and Friday 3-9pm and Saturday and Sunday noon-6pm.

Travis and Mike, the innovative craft brew makers are excited to welcome folks to the tap room to taste what they think is an audacious, yet technically well-executed beer. The Ballz Deep Double IPA we tasted Saturday was excellent, as was the British Pale Ale. We did not have food, but food is available and will be delivered direct to the tap room from the Inn at Gig Harbor's Heritage Restaurant right next door. The Heritage is one of Gig Harbor's hidden jewels of a restaurant offering incredible salads, seafood, burgers and specials all at very reasonable prices.

Coming soon to the tap room is a winter Stout. This beer boasts massive roasted and dark chocolate notes, with a wisp of floral Mt. Hood hops and a pleasant harmonious aroma. Perfect for a Northwest winter afternoon.

The Great Pumpkin: Myth or Magic?

More than four generations of American kids have grown up with "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown", the Emmy nominated animated special which first aired in 1966.

I have very vivid memories of watching it annually, as a child, a teenager and again with my children. Of course my experience with this and other classics like "A Charlie Brown Christmas" or the annual T.V. airing of "The Wizard of Oz" (oh those monkeys!), was at a time when there were four television channels. An event like "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" was highly anticipated and special, given you had one chance to see it...no video or dvd either.

Today kids are so bombarded with media in so many shapes and forms, that if desired, "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" is available at a moments notice 365 days a year. It certainly takes all the mystique out of it. Technology is what it is and there is no going back. As a result, I see many young parents looking for other ways to make fall traditions (like the Great Pumpkin) part of their family experience.

In Gig Harbor, there are TWO Great Pumpkins for families to enjoy this Halloween week. When you see either of these giant squash you will BELIEVE.

First, the Gig Harbor Historic Waterfront Association as a 500 pound pumpkin available for photo opportunities for FREE. The pumpkin is located all this week at the Harbor History Museum. Drop down between rain drops and get a photo of your kids, your pet or yourself with this monster.

Second , Uptown has a 1000 pound pumpkin that will be displayed on Halloween under the pavilion. This gigantic gourd will be carved at 10am on Halloween morning by renowned pumpkin carver Russ Leno. That will be a site to see...come and check it out!

So despite what Linus' advice was , "I've learned there are three things you don't discuss with people: religion, politics and The Great Pumpkin", I'm going out on a limb here and telling you, Gig Harbor is the home of the Great Pumpkin. Be a believer and enjoy it with your family.

And by the way, ABC will air "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" on Wednesday October 28th at 8pm. Watch it with your kids.

Hello-

My name is Matthew, I am in the third grade at Artondale Elementary School in Gig Harbor, Washington and I am starting a Community Service Project about recycling. The purpose of my project is to educate people on how recycling can hlep the world. Did you know that there is a floating garbage area in the Pacific Ocean that is twice the size of Texas? It is called the Eastern Garbage Patch and animals are dying from eating plastic in the ocian and some of the fish that eat the plastic end up in our homes and restaurants. I have put links to a few YouTube videos for you to watch about the Eastern Garbage Patch. One is good for kids, and one is good for adults, but there are many more on YouTube if you are interested in learning more about it.

I want everyone to help stop adding to this garbage area and also help the animals stay alive. After watching these videos, I hope you will recycle more and maybe pick up garbage on the beaches or anywhere that you live. I would like to find out how many people I can get to read this email and try to get it to go around the world. The Gig Harbor Civic Center is home to the Peninsula Art Leagues annual Juried ARts Show on now through November 13th. The best and most diverse show I have seen in all the years we have been hosting the show at the Civic Center.

A wide variety of beautiful paintings, photography and multi-media pieces are on display. The exhibit is open to the public during regular City Hall hours, Monday-Friday 8am-5pm. The Civic Center is closed on November 11th for Veterans Day.

Okay this is new and cool. Gig Harbor Historic Waterfront Association is taking its annual halloween activities in beautiful downtown Gig Harbor to a new level, with a great added event.

Residents should pick up a coupon for a free pumpkin at local downtown merchants (while supplies last) and then pick up their free pumpkin at the Harbor History Museum. Pumpkin pick up times are;

Double, double Toil and Trouble....

Howl for Halloween! I love it. Halloween is so fun in Gig Harbor. Kids and adults alike use this goofy holiday to express themselves in ways that no one can get away with the other 364 days of the year. I mean really - you can walk down the street and pass a pirate who is your dentist a dalmatian who is your doctor or a mummy who is your daddy! It's crazy and fun and nice to see people let their hair down in this town from time to time.

This year Halloween falls on a Saturday, which opens up even more possibilities. I would suspect more private parties will be taking place along with the tried and true Gig Harbor favorites, some with a new twist. So here is a list of the things I have been able to round up happening in the harbor;

HarvestFEST '09 is an annual event that celebrates the farming heritage on the Key Peninsula - Come out for the FREE family fun celebration of the farming heritage of the region this weekend, Saturday October 3rd. The festival includes a Farm Tour, Fiber Arts Show, Wine Tasting, and a Cornucopia Dinner Dance. Don't miss the Gig Harbor Chowder Cook Off at the Gig Harbor Farmers Market this coming Saturday September 26th. The 9th annual event features chowders from area restaurants competing against each other for the BEST CHOWDER title for 2009.

BLAZING ONION IS BLAZING FUNION!

So happy to have another new restaurant in Gig Harbor - the Blazing Onion opened last week and my husband and I had a great dinner there yesterday.

So here is the scoop. Kinda like a Red Robin, kinda like The Tides, kinda like Billy McHales, but all that said - really not like any of those at all. It's a great concept that will certainly be a hit for restaurant starved Gig Harborites!

We walked in the door, where you actually place your order before you sit down...but don't be confused - its not a fast food joint. However, while we were waiting a really nice young lady asked us if we wanted to sit in the bar, where it was full service. Well that was a no-brainer, given it was just me and my husband. So if you want to sit in the regular restaurant you order when you come in, but in the bar you have a seat and get a server. Well that's definitely different but it worked for us.

We had a great table right next to the huge open window with the gorgeous Sunday sun streaming in. I counted a total of 12 big screen T.V.'s in the joint, all with the Seahawks on and lots of fun crowd interaction with the game. Noisy but in a fun way.

Our server, Crystal, was attentive and friendly and helped us navigate the giant menu which includes much more than burgers. Next time I visit I will try one of the seafood entrees or the steak salad, but for today it was all about the gourmet burger menu.

My husband I and both ordered burgers and we split them. We had the California Bacon Burger, which was great, with a nice thick slab of bacon and yummy guacamole too. But my favorite was the Wild Boar Burger. The meat was excellent and moist, but the over the top ingredient was the delicious coleslaw on the burger and the signature BOB sauce. Crystal explained the sauce has 27 ingredients, but can best be described as a cross between BBQ sauce, Ketchup and Mayonnaise. It was delicious.

Unlimited fries come with the burger, and lots of drink choices from beer to mixed drinks and of course non-alcoholic beverages too were available.

The decor is beautiful and our server told us it has been very crowded...but I totally recommend checking out Gig Harbor's newest addition - the Blazing Onion in Uptown Gig Harbor!! Welcome to owners Dave and Lori Jones and all the great staff. www.blazingonion.com

Those of you who know me know that I cut my teeth as both an event planner and marketing director as the Executive Director of the Issaquah Salmon Days Festival back in the early '90's. That event still holds a special place in my heart, and in its 40th year it is one of the largest and best organized festivals in the state.

So, three years ago when local fisherman Paul Ancich proposed to me an event for Gig Harbor called Donkey Creek Chum Festival, I felt right in my comfort zone. And it made perfect sense for a community like Gig Harbor to acknowledge and celebrate our local chum that run up Donkey Creek, and the local fisherman's club that has kept that creek alive for returning salmon since 1972.

That first year I proposed to Paul that the fisherman work hand in hand with local environmental group - not always a partnership you expect. But I was convinced that the two groups have the same goal; healthy fish in a healthy Puget Sound. And thus was born a great event in our community that celebrates the fact that "It Takes a Fish to Raise a Village", the slogan for the Donkey Creek Chum Festival. Now about a dozen local groups and organizations work through out the year to make this event a success for all.

This year, located at the parking lot of the new Harbor History Museum, the event includes Kayak races, lots of interesting and educational booths, kids activities and Chum Burgers cooked by the Gig Harbor Commercial Fisherman's Club.

Gig Harbor Welcomes New Boys and Girls Club

I've lived in Gig Harbor for more than 15 years, and I remember hearing rumors when we first came to this community that a Boys and Girls Club was on the horizon. At that time, rumors also included that a second Narrows Bridge would be built, that a hospital was proposed and a YMCA was coming.

Wow. I think we done good! On October 1st, the Jim and Carolyn Milgard Family HOPE Center and Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget will be dedicated at 8502 Skansie Avenue, Gig Harbor WA 98332. The facility will open to the public on October 5th.

The Boys and Girls Club has several partners in the facility including Lindquist Dental Clinic for Children, Peninsula Athletic Association, and an Active Adult Center (senior center).

The facility will offer progams for kids including sports, performing arts and arts and crafts as well as computer classes, environmental classes as well as gardening.

Celebrate and Thank All Who Keep Us Safe

The greater Gig Harbor community is protected every day, by a variety of jurisdictions that work together collectively. Gig Harbor Police, Gig Harbor/Pierce Fire, Pierce County Sherrif and the Washington State Patrol, as well as local EMT's are all part of the plan to keep our residents safe in the Gig Harbor area.

Now the Gig Harbor United Methodist Church has created an event to say thank you to all of these important players in our safety. The First Blessing and Celebration of Law Enforcement, Firefighters, EMT's and their families will take place on Sunday October 4th from 1-4PM at the United Methodist Church, 7400 Pioneer Way, Gig Harbor.

This event is open to the public and will include opportunity to talk first hand to our first responders, enjoy up close look at emergency equipment and canine unit, as well as music, refreshement and games for the kids.

Take a few moments out of your weekend to say thank you to all of those who, most often, are behind the scenes making a safe community for all of us. They deserve it.

DOG DAYS IN GIG HARBOR

There are many, many dog walk events around the Puget Sound region these days, but one of the "originals" and one of the best takes place in scenic Gig Harbor every September. HARBOR HOUNDS, returns September 26th for one day of fido-friendly family fun.

Dogs and devotees come from far and near to participate in this annual event, a benefit for the Prison Pet Partnership, Coalition Humane (formerly Peninsula Spay and Neuter Project) and the Gig Harbor Mid-Day Rotary Club.

Action begins at 10am on September 26th as hounds and humans stroll the two miles of picturesque Gig Harbor waterfront between Donkey Creek Park and Skansie Brothers Park, stopping along the way for water, pats and chats. The frisky festivities continue until 3pm with a mix of entertainment, contests, demonstrations, information, vendors and food.

Pooch loving participants can pick one of three ways to register for Harbor Hounds. The $30 Top Dog fee, limited to the first 100 pre-registered dogs, includes a 2009 Harbor Hounds t-shirt, and limited edition poster. The $24 Standard rate ($26 on event day) comes with a t-shirt, bandanna and goodie bag. For the "recession" minded, $10 rate ($12 on event day) provides the bandanna and goodie bag.
